Changes in the American lifestyle have led to special opportunities for providers of rental housing. "Apartment Living in America," a publication of the National Multi Housing Council, reports that many of today's renters are more wealthy and might easily afford to buy a home, but instead are choosing the convenience and sense of community that apartments offer. Baby boomers, who dominate the market, are looking for a high level of service; many also wish to avoid the responsibilities of home ownership, including everything from the mortgage to the lawn care. While most of the luxury apartment owners in Washington, D.C., are older, the younger generation is still significant. Many apartment owners are young and single and live in their apartments longer than ever before. They realize that an apartment community offers easy access to entertainment, culture, and other conveniences, as many service companies are opening locations around apartment complexes.
